Gravitational potential energy (GPE) is the energy stored in an object due to its height above a reference point. The formula GPE = mgh shows that energy increases with both mass and height. This is why a heavy boulder at the top of a cliff has far more potential energy than a pebble at the same height — and why it causes more damage when it falls.
